How to Avoid Dry Socket After a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a viable solution to gum disease, impacted teeth, and irreparable tooth damage. However, some patients may experience dry sockets after tooth removal. Dry sockets are usually painful and can interfere with the healing process following a tooth extraction.

Here is how to reduce the risk of a dry socket after tooth extraction:

Practice Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Following your tooth extraction procedure, practice proper oral hygiene habits. You may need to rinse your mouth with warm salt water or prescription mouth rinse several times a day to help keep the extraction site clean. While brushing your other teeth is okay, avoid brushing the treated area directly for about four days after the extraction.

Avoid Drinking Through Straws for at Least the First 24 Hours After Tooth Extraction

It is crucial to allow blood clot development on the extraction site. Sucking on a straw can rapture the blood clot and pull it away from the socket, which can hinder the healing process. You are encouraged to avoid drinking with a straw for at least 24-48 hours after your surgery.

Do Not Smoke Cigarettes for at Least 48 Hours

Smoking after tooth extraction can interfere with the proper healing process. This is because it increases the pain experienced in the treated area. Smoking or using other tobacco products can also inhibit blood flow, creating a dry socket.

Avoid Vigorous Physical Activity

You should also avoid vigorous physical activities for at least 24 hours after the procedure. This could include intense exercises or simple activities such as spitting vigorously after rinsing your mouth. Vigorous activities create pressure in your mouth which can dislodge your blood clot.

Avoid Hard and Crunchy Foods

Hard and crunchy foods can get into the dry socket and cause pain, potentially disrupting healing. So it helps to eat soft foods instead of tough ones. Most dentists will provide dietary instructions; ensure you follow them.

The most recommended soft foods include smoothies, pudding, and yogurt. After about one or two weeks, you can start including more solid and spicy foods in your diet.

Take Plenty of Water and Get Proper Rest

Drinking fluids after tooth extraction helps keep your mouth clean and bacteria-free. This can help keep the treated area clean and prevent infection. Getting plenty of rest after your surgery can also reduce bleeding and promote blood clot formation.
