What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are often the best way to treat a damaged or decayed tooth. Typically made of porcelain, a crown is a hollow tooth that is built to fit over the damaged tooth, completely covering it up all the way down to the gum line.

Same Day Crowns

We have the ability to create your crown on the same exact day, and we can do all kinds of custom characterizations so that the crown we make for you looks nearly identical to the surrounding teeth! Here is an example that we did in our office: (crown is on the very far right)

This benefits you because you don’t have to be worried about a temporary crown coming loose, coming back for a second appointment, possibly getting numb again, or bacteria leaking underneath the temporary crown. The digital workflow allows for a streamlined experience for you!

We no longer need to take messy impressions either! We have a 3D scanner that can recreate your teeth on a computer, and then we can 3D print your teeth from there. We are doing everything we can possibly do to make your experience at the dentist a positive one!”

We also have partnered with a local counseling group, and for every 5 new patients we are able to donate enough to cover 1 counseling session for someone who cannot afford it.

How Long Will My Crown Last?

Crowns usually have a lifespan of between 10-20 years, but can easily last longer. Maintain good oral hygiene and see us for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months to keep your crown in good shape.

Do Crowns Hurt?

Crowns don’t hurt at all. Your mouth will be numb during the treatment process, so you will feel no pain or discomfort. Your tooth may feel tender for a few days, but it will feel completely normal once your permanent crown has been placed.

How It Works: The Dental Crown Treatment Process

After your initial consultation and approval, it usually takes two appointments over a period of two to three weeks to get your crown. Here’s what you can expect from the process.

Step 1

Trimming & Crown Fitting

At your preparation appointment, your dentist will clean and numb your mouth. Then, they will trim away some of your enamel and take a mold of your teeth, which will be sent to our dental lab.

Step 2

Building Your Crown

You’ll be sent home with a resin crown to protect your trimmed tooth, and our partner dental lab will begin building your crown. This may take a few weeks.

Step 3

Crown Placement

Once your crown is done and arrives at Shook Family Dental, you’ll come back for your last appointment. We will check the crown and then bond it in place permanently, completing the procedure.
